Meet Nate
-
Before becoming our Lane County Circuit Court Judge, Nathan Lichvarcik was a criminal law attorney with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He served our community in the Eugene branch for the past 14 years. Since 2020, he has been the branch supervisor for Eugene and Medford, which handles all federal criminal cases occurring in seventeen Oregon counties, including Lane County. These cases primarily focused on child exploitation offenses, civil rights offenses, financial fraud, environmental offenses, drug trafficking, violent crime, and crimes occurring on federal lands. In this role, Nate led two offices of prosecutors, paralegals, legal assistants, a Tribal liaison, victim-witness coordinator, receptionists and law clerks.
-
Nathan has committed his personal and professional life to public service for the last 27 years:
Serving in AmeriCorps, where he mentored students in an after-school program
Assisting a defendant on death row as a young lawyer
Working at Legal Aid
Serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney since 2008, helping victims of violent crime and playing a role in removing illegal firearms from the streets
Serving on the Board of Directors of Jasper Mountain, a Lane County non-profit organization focused on helping abused children
Instructing and mentoring hundreds of law students over the last decade at the University of Oregon Law School where he taught trial advocacy
He also recently volunteered with Food for Lane County and the Burrito Brigade, nonprofit organizations in Eugene that fight hunger through community-driven food programs.
-
Nate and his wife Karly are the parents of three children who were primarily raised in the South Eugene school system. His children grew up swimming and fishing in Lane County lakes and rivers, and competing on local sports teams. Karly worked as a substitute teacher at many of the 4J elementary, middle and high schools and as a yoga teacher in Eugene. Nate has been a part of the University of Oregon Law School teaching community for over a decade.

AS OUR CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE, NATE UPHOLDS OUR LANE COUNTY VALUES
FAIR
Nate prioritizes fair trials and equal justice for all who appear before the bench. As an attorney, Nate collaborated and worked closely with judges and judicial staff, federal agencies, the federal public defender’s office, and local law enforcement. He assisted plea negotiations and helped prosecutors and defense attorneys achieve a fair result.
BALANCED
Nate’s leadership style balances humanity, efficiency, and professionalism. He emphasizes open and honest communication, conducts myself with a calm, even temperament, and strives to always practice humility, compassion, and decisiveness. Early in his career, as a judicial law clerk, he learned the value of listening to all sides and finding the right result under the law.
A JUDGE WITH INTEGRITY
As a Circuit Court Judge, Nate faithfully adheres to principles of equality, justice, and integrity. As a prosecutor, he was proud to pursue justice for victims. He was equally proud, however, of the many cases he never charged. Those decisions equal doing the right things for the right reasons as a public servant. They are equally, if not more important at times, than when the prosecutions result in a conviction.
